Defensive lapses cost Colts

Auchtermuchty Bellvue Colts travelled to Glenrothes this morning for their 4th football match of the season to take on Rothes Juniors.

Colts Squad: Burton, Bayne, Grieve, Ness, McDougall, Tavener, Svetoslavov, Shek, Passmore, Paton, Hynd, Smith & Wilson

Colts started brightly and on the front foot as they took the game to Rothes. Some good possession created an opening for Passmore, who shot narrowly wide. Rothes started to come in to the game more, applying pressure of their own with Grieve and Bayne looking composed at the back. As Rothes started to dominate, Burton had to be lively and was well positioned to clear his lines when they threatened to break through.

Muchty were playing some good football and made the breakthrough through Passmore. McDougall played a long, accurate ball through the Rothes defence and Passmore came in from the angle and shot low in to the far corner. It keeps up his record of scoring in every match he has played this season.

Rothes quickly got back in to the game with their striker showing strength to shrug off the attentions of the Bellvue defenders and calmly slotting past Burton to score. Towards the end of the half Rothes were again on the scoresheet. A ball between the Colts defenders caused a race between the Bayne and the Rothes striker, and with Burton coming out to win the ball, it was the Rothes player who managed to stretch to get there first and nick the ball past the keeper to score.

Muchty were struggling to get a grip on the game again and as the game went in to the second half, it was Rothes who were making all the running and goals. Ness, who was imposing himself on the pitch with some tough tackling and nice short passing, almost got on to the score sheet after a great run through the defence saw his effort saved by the Rothes keeper.

Rothes hadn't finished scoring though and after a couple of shots were blocked, the ball broke and fell behind a Glenrothes player who had time to turn, and with Colts defence slow to react, placed a low shot passed Burton.

With around 10 minutes to go, Muchty started to find their way again. The re-introduction of Svetoslavov and Tavener added some tougher tackling and this seemed to inspire the team, whose passing game returned and they started to threaten more. After a couple of corners, Smith was unlucky to see a shot hit the post. McDougall and Hynd were working well on the right and it was this combination which saw Colts add to their tally. A ball from McDougall found Hynd on the right and she cut inside and released a through pass to Wilson, who ran in on goal, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball in to the empty net.

Colts were showing more attacking impetus and the Rothes keeper was alert to save from Smith, Hynd and Passmore. Although Colts were starting to play better, ultimately time was against them as the whistle blew to signal the end of the game. For the supporter, the game was perhaps a lot closer than the scoreline suggested and it will be something for the team to reflect on in training ahead of next weeks game.

Congratulations to Svetoslavov who was voted "Player of the Match" from the Rothes players.
