Colts rally hard with depleted squad in Kirkcaldy

It was a depleted squad which travelled to Kirkcaldy to take on Raith Rovers Stars. Some late call offs and injuries meant Colts were only able to name 2 substitutes.

Squad: Burton, Grieve, Brown, McDougall, McIver, Bayne, Svetoslavov, Passmore, Wilson, Shek & Lyon

From the first whistle Auchtermuchty were on the front foot and began to create some pressure on the Rovers defence. Their play was rewarded when some good link up play between Wilson and Passmore allowed the latter a shot on goal which found the back of the net.

Colts running and closing down off the ball combined with their strength in the tackle is something which has been missing in recent weeks and Rovers were constantly under pressure and not able to settle. Muchty were taking the game to Rovers, but it was a superb counter attack which brought the second goal. With Raith searching for an equaliser they committed a number of players forward, however when their attack broke down, a through ball to Svetoslavov who was still in his own half gave him a clear run through on the keeper and he made no mistake with a finish from outside the box.

Rovers got back in to the game when a pass out of the Colts defence was intercepted and the Rovers striker ran through to shot across the keeper and in to the net. Not to be downbeat, Colts quickly got back on the front foot and Shek was unlucky to see his shot from close range hit the crossbar and go over. Another goal wasn't long in coming with Passmore again on the scoresheet with a nice shot after coming in from the right.

The second half continued in much the same vain as the first with Colts on the front foot from the start. Muchty were able to force a number of corners, however the Rovers defence stood firm to keep Colts out. Grieve must have thought he had scored from a free kick which beat the keeper but blocked on the line by a Rovers defender.

After hitting the crossbar in the first half, Shek got his reward with a fine goal. He twisted and turned a defender and then after losing the ball showed strength to win it back and beat another defender before slotting the ball beyond the Rovers keeper. Svetoslavov then had a turn from a free kick and despite beating the keeper, the ball was cleared off the line.

Rovers got back in to the game minutes later when a shot from the right slipped through Burtons grasp and nestled in the corner. Lyon then went close for Muchty after beating his defender only for his shot to be well saved by the keeper.

In the final stages Rovers got another then a slack pass in defence gave the Rovers striker a one on one with Burton and the Raith player making no mistake. Hearts were then in the mouth of the Colts players, coaches and supporters as a Rovers cross flashed across the goal, but luckily from a Muchty point of view there was nobody on hand to score.

The final whistle came and it signaled the end of a much improved performance by Colts. We'd like to thank the referee and the Rovers players and coaching team for a great game.

Our next game is 25 September against AM Soccer in Auchtermuchty with a 10am kick off.

Player of the match, voted by the Rovers players was Passmore, who continued his fine form this season.
